Dreadnought TORCH, rebel fleet staging area, medical bay, 10 July 2266, 09:10 hours

Lieutenant Commander Lorencia picked at her salad halfheartedly. She hadn't even touched her sandwich. Taking breakfast in the medical bay of the TORCH had become something of a ritual for her. A kind of replacement for her daily breakfasts with Noriko in the HYPERION's mess hall. And she could continue her discussions with herself without drawing attention.

The night had gone by far too quickly. Doctor Tauser's words had kept her awake and still echoed in her mind. Especially what he had said about guilt and her feelings. Until now, she had convinced herself that she only saw Noriko as a friend. A very good friend. Now all she felt was confusion that had her questioning everything.

Perhaps it was her guilty conscience that had driven her to help the ship's FO. Or maybe it really had been the beginning of something more. The need for closeness and... what? She just didn't know. And unfortunately, there was nobody she could talk to about it. Well, there was Doc Tauser, of course. But although her conversation with him had gone very well, she didn't want to repeat it. She wasn't stupid. And she wasn't traumatized. She just had a few everyday problems - well, more or less. She didn't need a shrink.

She stared angrily at her sandwich. Finally, she grabbed it and took a big bite. She may not be hungry, but she had to eat. Otherwise her body wouldn't survive the next ten-hour shift.

It all came down to one simple question: Guilt or love? Did she feel guilty for all the mistakes she had made and that had negatively affected Noriko's life? Or did she feel love? What did she feel for Noriko Ishida? Perhaps it was a dangerous mixture of both? And more importantly: did it matter?

She looked up at the stasis tank. The pale face of her superior officer, colleague and friend made her sob.

What's wrong with me?! Pull yourself together, Lorencia!

She looked away quickly. She just couldn't deal with this right now. She was responsible for the HYPERION. Theoretically, they could be attacked at any time by an armada of loyalist ships. It would be enough if a single traitor among their ranks betrayed their position to the enemy.

With a final sigh, she threw the salad and sandwich into the medical recycling unit, squared her shoulders and left. Her work awaited. Another day stretched ahead of her. Another damn day.
